Part of the Edinburgh International Festival
This is a one-off concert performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan classic presented as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. Full of the witty prose for which G&S are so well-known, and music packed with nautical charm, this seafaring romp is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
All aboard the H.M.S. Pinafore, where the Captain’s daughter Josephine and humble sailor Ralph are madly in love. But the daughter of a Captain can’t marry a lowly sailor, and her hand has been promised to Admiral Sir Joseph Porter. The future looks bleak for our young lovers, and despite the help of Ralph’s crewmates, he and Josephine seem destined to be apart, until an old nursemaid turns up with news that changes everything.
H.M.S. Pinafore was Gilbert and Sullivan’s first major hit. Influenced by Offenbach, and parodying the Italian opera of the day, it set the tone for the whole series of Savoy operas which were to follow.
Renowned English tenors John Mark Ainsley and Toby Spence take on the roles of Admiral Porter and Ralph, with Andrew Foster-Williams as Captain Corcoran and comedy legend Tim Brooke-Taylor as the Narrator. Conducted byRichard Egarr.
