This clever, tuneful operetta by the master of musical comedy, William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, makes great fun of the old-fashioned Victorian melodrama: the villain who carries off the poor-but-virtuous maiden, the gallant (disguised) hero, his faithful ancient sidekick who remembers the glory days, the snake in the grass whom everybody trusts, the wild, mad girl, and the chorus of villagers and bad baronets who support the hilarity. Expect swaggering patriotism, a frightening curse, ghosts coming to life, and a sudden surprise conclusion, all told with clever songs and dances. (G)
