Godalming Operatic Society’s first production was The Yeomen of the Guard in 1925 and since then, with the exception of Thespis, we have performed all of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas.
Our annual G&S production takes place in February and we give 6 performances at the Borough Hall, Godalming and in the following week we give a further 4 performances at The Leatherhead Theatre.
During the summer, usually in June, we perform a light hearted concert at the Electric Theatre in Guildford.
As a traditional amateur society we are extremely proud of our established pedigree. From 1926 until 1996 famous names from D’Oyly Carte produced most our shows. Of twenty producers since 1925 no less than eleven had performed with D’Oyly Carte and at least three under the direction of W.S. Gilbert. Our first producer from D’Oyly Carte was Hugh Enes Blackmore in 1926, in the following year he was joined by his wife Tessa (née Snelson) as co-producer. Some of the others were Clara Dow, C. William Morgan, Leonard Osborn, Cynthia Morey and Meston Reid.
In 2005 we performed Iolanthe at The International G&S Festival in Buxton's magnificent Opera House. In 2012 we return to the International Festival to perform The Pirates of Penzance. In addition, in 2007, we performed Utopia Limited at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera.
All of our G&S productions are accompanied by a full orchestra. Apart from 1925 all of our Musical Directors have been leading musicians from Charterhouse School.
Rehearsals for our annual G&S production begin in mid September. New members are always welcome and our membership fees are very reasonable.
We also have a wide range of social activities for members to enjoy.
