On October 15th and October 16th the Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be performing a fully staged production of H.M.S. Pinafore.
One of the most well-known and beloved of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, H.M.S. Pinafore is filled with comic characters, a fun story line and some great and memorable songs. Like other Gilbert and Sullivan works, Pinafore pokes fun at British society and the social mores of the day.
The H.M.S. Pinafore is under the command of Captain Corcoran. On board with him is Josephine, his beautiful young daughter. Among the ship’s crew members is Ralph Rackstraw, foremast hand. Ralph was smitten with Josephine from the moment he first saw her (that is frequently the case in these shows). But he knows he dare not tell her how he feels. She is his captain’s daughter and her position in British society much higher than his. He knows that she would never allow herself to marry a common sailor. Unbeknownst to Ralph, Josephine is secretly smitten with him too, but she dare not say so for he is but a common sailor. And besides, her father has promised her hand in marriage to Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B, First Lord of the Admiralty and she has promised her father that she will honor his wishes.
But that will soon change as Little Buttercup reveals to all a secret she has kept hidden regarding a mistake that she made, in her baby farming days, many years ago
